During an inauguration day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reinvent” the metropolis, promising “a new era” and an ambitious commencement to his tenure.

An Unprecedented Mayor

The 34-year-old political star, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A moment like this is rare and rarer still is it that the citizens whose grasp the levers of change,” Mamdani remarked.

Ignoring counsel to be modest, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will govern boldly and broadly.”

Governing with Socialist Convictions

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his political ideology. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will lead as one. I will not abandon my principles for concern of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to an enthusiastic response.

The inauguration was a dual event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a old subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's rise as a victory over powerful interests.

A Sweeping Blueprint

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a plan promising:

• Subsidized daycare
• Free buses
• A halt to rent increases for about 1 million households
• A experiment of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion expense of these services may prove difficult to secure. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing External Headwinds

The new mayor must contend with concern from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past stances regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a appointments director resigned over controversial past tweets.

Mamdani has sought to address these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was described as surprisingly productive.

The Fundamental Tests of Leadership

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in delivering essential functions: trash collection, curbing the rodent problem, repairing roadways, and making sure smooth subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's anti-crime efforts, citing historically low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual piece of advice about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his address with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
